Chasing Ground Truth

There are many great ideas that spring from board room brainstorms. But farming doesn’t happen there. It really doesn’t happen in the research greenhouse, livestock lab, or small plot either, though that’s certainly a step closer.

Real farming is miles and miles away.

In the U.S., it happens with thousands of independent farm families on 400 million acres of American cropland and pasture, ‘from sea to shining sea’ as the song goes. The truth of it is out there at field-level.

Nearby is a photo my son Cody took somewhere near the Colo./Neb. state line. We were chasing ground truth that day and found a good deal of it outside Imperial, Nebraska. Ground truth – or what we sometimes call “thick data” – provides the crucial link between remotely-gathered data and the actual conditions with farmers at the farmgate. Ultimately this leads to better decision-making and an improved strategy that can get you forward faster.
